In 1975 when Jack Bogle invented the first index fund under The Vanguard Group, he faced a lot of skepticism from his competitors who claimed that his product was "un-American" & was destined to failed. Fast forward to 2020, and it is estimated that index funds hold more than $4.5 trillion in total assets. These funds have levelled the playing field for retail investors – making it easier than ever for the average person to gain exposure to the stock market. That being said, there have been skeptics once again who are questioning whether these massive capital inflows into index funds are smart investments, or just herd mentality.
