Juggling Superpowers: Pivot to Populism in the Asia Pacific

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has made clear his intent to shift the balance of superpower influence in the Asia Pacific. The national economic roadmap currently rests on his personal, military, and practical arguments to advance Philippine-Chinese ties at the expense of goodwill with America.  Despite Duterte’s initial policy adjustments, QGM presents an alternative recommendation for the Philippines to shift its economic strategy in alignment with the interests of ASEAN nations instead.  At a time when U.S. foreign policy direction is uncertain and China’s leaders tighten their grip on power, the Philippines would benefit most from balanced trade deals and rapid regional technology transfers.
