The Franco-African Pivot

French President Emmanuel Macron has signalled his intention to make sweeping changes to France’s relationship with its many former colonies in Africa. As a presidential candidate Macron uniquely decried France’s colonial rule over Algeria as a “crime against humanity” during his visit to Algeria just over a year ago, a statement that elicited support throughout Africa but criticism from many in France. As the first French political leader to take such an apologetic tone, Macron is taking steps towards his bold desire to redefine the nature of the complex connection between France and Africa.
